So, they say Obama is black.

Can somebody explain to me why everybody is so focus on saying that Obama is black.? Wasn't his mother white? That makes him 50% black and 50% white. Have you seen a picture of his mother? His features are just like hers. Yes, the color of his skin is more like his father's but that doesn't make him 100% black. What would his mother think if she was alive? It is like she never existed. In fact she and her parents (also whites) were the ones that raised our future president. Since we all want to be politically correct, wouldn't it be better to say that he is by racial? This sounds to me as a residue from the times of slavery.
OK, finally I got it out of my system. Thanks for listening.

good point. He seems very "white" to me. But, I really think he is proud of his Black heritage and the fact that the President seems to always be very white and that has changed, is wonderful. I think that's why we point it out so much.

You should read his autobiography "Dreams of My Father." Much of it is spend on his trying to identify himself as a person with black skin being raised by a white mother and white grandparents and trying to get in touch with his African ancestry.

I think the main reason people say he is black is because when you look at him, he is black.

As Obama himself put it when his 'blackness' was questions, "My barber and taxi drivers seem to think I'm black."

Much of our racial (as well as ethnic and other) identities are made up by how society perceives us. Even though I am half-Japanese, I have for the most part seen myself as a white kid because that is how most people treat me. Whether or not Obama is 100% black, most people see him and treat him by the color of his skin - black.

One of my best friends is also half african descent, yet I see her as my black friend. She's black. That is how the world perceives her... Just like Obama.
